Nasal Congestion with Face Masks

Many people report nasal congestion and difficulty breathing through their nose while wearing a face mask

What is causing this?

HEAT: The accumulation of heat from breathed air in the mask causes dilation of blood vessels, tissue swelling in the nose

NEGATIVE PRESSURE: Breathing in air against a filter or mask can cause negative pressure in the nose. This causes expansion of tissues and increased nasal congestion which results in the perception of decreased ability to breathe through the nose.

ALLERGIES: People already with allergies may feel they are worse with mask use. Pollens & other allergens can build up on the surface of masks. Make sure you are not allergic to the fibers or materials in your mask. Clean your mask or change out your mask after each use.

OTHER MEDICAL CONDITIONS: Pre-existing medical issues such as a deviated septum, nasal polyps, large adenoid and tonsil tissues may also contribute to difficulty breathing through a face mask.
